Sherry D. Ramsey is a member of the Writers’ Federation of Nova Scotia and a prolific author of speculative fiction. On the morning of Tuesday, April 24, 2018, politicians, press, and arts organizers gathered at City Hall to welcome Halifax’s new poet laureate, Dr. Afua Cooper, a widely published author and the current James Robinson Johnston Chair in Black Canadian Studies at Dalhousie University.
The Atlantic Book Awards Society (ABAS) has released its schedule of free events featuring this year’s shortlisted authors and illustrators. The events take place throughout Atlantic Canada from May 2-10 and culminate with the awards gala at Paul O’Regan Hall in Halifax Central Library on Thursday, May 10 at 7 pm, when the recipients of 13 different book awards will be revealed.
In addition to the Atlantic Book Awards gala and festival, the Atlantic Book Awards Society is pleased to join forces with the Atlantic Publishers Marketing Association to present East Bound: Talking Atlantic Books May 9 to 11 in Halifax. Following a successful inaugural event in 2017, the three-day event will celebrate and promote books published in Atlantic Canada to Canadian and international delegates.

The Evelyn Richardson Non-Fiction Award was established in 1977 and honours the best non-fiction books written by Nova Scotia writers. It is named in memory of Evelyn Richardson (1902-1976), who won the Governor General’s Award for Creative Non-Fiction in 1945 for her memoir of island life, We Keep a Light.
